As we all know, East Dunbartonshire Council are forced into a position where they have to make cost cuttings amounting to £8M this year. Part of these cost cuttings was to do away with the Scholl Crossing Patrol and transfer the Caldwell Hall into community management or close it.
Following negotiations between the Council and Torrance Community Council it was acknowledged that Torrance required the School Crossing Patrol Officer to remain and this decision was reversed. East Dunbartonshire Council no longer has any plans to remove our crossing patrol now, or in the foreseeable future. See opposite for a copy of the letters sent to the Council.
The Caldwell Hall is a different matter. It was clear that the Council would close this hall if a group of volunteers did not come forward to take over its management. No matter how much we argued with the Council or presented evidence about the halls usage, they would close it if a management committee was not forthcoming. Meetings were held with the user groups of the hall to discuss the present position and decide upon a way forward. At a public meeting held on May 12th 2010, within the Caldwell Hall, 9 members of the community volunteered to be part of the new management committee. Their kind act has assured the future of our hall.
