Welcome to TorranceWeb
Torrance is a small and picturesque village situated 8 miles north of Glasgow City Centre (view map). It lies close to the river Kelvin and the Forth & Clyde Canal and is surrounded by countryside, farmland and hills. All this allows it to boast some wonderful scenery, walks, wildlife and of course - pubs.
The 1991 census registered a population of 2387 and the 2001 census registered a population of around 2,500. Torrance contains a local school - Torrance Primary School which around 250 pupils attend. The school is vastly growing and not just in the amount of attendees, but in size as well. Building work is under-way create a new school sports hall. The Sport Hall is expected to be finished by September, with an opening ceremony for the local area and Primary Seven pupils, who have moved on to High School part of Torrance Primary, Boclair Academy.

This web site has been set up to inform you about all aspects of our village. As the site grows it will include more about activities in and around Torrance, clubs, forthcoming events, local businesses and much more. It is a non-profit making site designed to serve the community of Torrance and it's visitors. It is receiving over 500 visitors a month and with plenty of room for expansion, it needs all visitors to contribute.

Torrance Community Initiative Plans Rejected.
As most of you will be aware, Torrance Community Initiative (TCI) submitted 5 planning applications to build houses and a sports centre in the village. Torrance Action Group mounted a high profile and successful campaign to oppose these plans. The main objection to the proposed building, was a housing development and a £4.5m sports centre on green belt land which was previously owned by the people of Torrance. A total of 449 objection letters were lodged with East Dunbartonshire District Council with only 4 letters of approval being submitted. All five applications were refused at the Planning Board Meeting of 6 May 2008. TCI have been asked to hand the title deeds of this land back over to the community but are refusing to do so.
It is clear from the Planning Board’s recommendations that allowing these developments to go ahead would set a dangerous precedent for encroachment onto the Green Belt and make further applications difficult to refuse. In other words, if the builders were allowed into Woodmill Park they would be allowed in anywhere in Torrance.
TCI have confirmed in writing that it is still their intention to build on Woodmill Park.
Have a look at the Gallery section of the site. It features images from in and around Torrance which have been submitted by visitors. The gallery can also be used by you to show off and share your own photos of a special occasion. Share them free of charge with family and friends around the world.
